It’s an honour to give our next spotlight to Domenic DeFrancesco, Project Manager & Estimator at Sesco Group located in Caledon, Ontario, Canada. See his Q&A below:

Why did you decide to be a business owner?

I felt that my strong work ethics would serve me better in an environment I can control, contribute to and add value to its growth. University prepared me but my ambition and motivation to succeed could only be realized with the opportunity of becoming a partner or business owner

In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of being a business owner?

If you have a passion for what you do, then the pros are much greater than the cons. On the positive side, contributing to decision making from project inception and following it through to successful project completion is a very self -satisfying reward. During the process, there is always something new to learn. The negatives are the financial risks involved and the long hours.

What are some hurdles you had to overcome while being a business owner?

Presenting and implementing new technologies and restructuring administrative processes was a challenge that required me to find a solution for a seamless and blended transition between the old with the new.

Knowledge and innovation is power and in an industry where the majority of the competition, clientele, suppliers and other business relationships are the age of boomers, I was challenged to find a way to draw on and learn from their successes and apply it to the new technologies and knowledge that I knew were necessary to maintain and advance us into the future. It required a lot of patience, a lot of listening, discussion, debates and a lot of confidence to prove that once combined, the productive balance of both would give us a competitive advantage moving forward. Once achieved, overcoming that hurdle earned me the respect and confidence of my partners and associates in the industry.

What is your vision and exit strategy for the business?

My vision is shared. Being a company that promotes the importance of teamwork, we all work towards the same vision. Our goal is to continue growing while maintaining our culture, high standards and well-deserved reputation in the industry. We continually keep up with and seek new technologies so that we continue to be a valued asset to our customers with repeat business as well as build new customer relationships.

My father and business mentor, Frank DeFrancesco, started this business thirty two years ago – and was later joined by his brother which made Sesco a family business. My exit strategy will be to retire with the company and hopefully  be succeeded by our family’s next generation.
