It’s an honour to give our next spotlight to Dr. Melisa Siragusa, Founder of Nobleton Optometrylocated in Nobelton, Ontario, Canada. See her Q&A below:

img_4823_eWhy did you decide to be a business owner?

It was always my dream to open a boutique optometry clinic in my hometown.   Although it was a scary decision at first, I knew I wanted to take the plunge and start my own practice. I also have a certain standard of care that I want to uphold and the best way to do this is to create the standard myself.   As an independent practitioner I have the ability to manage my own schedule and give more individualized attention to my patients. I want to create a fun and enjoyable environment and provide the best quality eye care experience to all of my patients.

image1-3-1In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of being a business owner?

The pros of being a business owner are that you are able to create your own hours, set the tone of the office and have a hand in all aspects of the business. The Cons: Even though you can set your own hours, the reality is that you end up devoting more than 40 hours per week taking care of all of your responsibilities. You also have to deal with certain things that as an employee you may not have had to deal with before, such as marketing, overhead expenses, accounting, and paper work.

What are some hurdles you had to overcome while being a business owner?

Opening a business is not for the faint of heart. Start up costs can be extensive and while you do not need a business degree to run a business, there is a lot to learn before you jump in. In fact, you are always learning. Now that I have my own office, my role as a doctor has changed. I am not only examining patients, but also managing every detail of my business from employee interviews, relationships with vendors, patient records, accounts receivable, marketing etc. There is a lot to balance and a lot of decisions to be made.

What is your vision and exit strategy for the business?image2-1-1

My vision is to offer my patients the highest standard of care and quality of product. I want to continue to grow with and support the local community. As for exit strategy, I haven’t yet started to think about retirement. I hope to find an associate with the same passion for the business as myself and who is interested in taking over my practice.

Thanks Melisa for participating in our Spotlight! We wish you nothing but the best!
