BizSPOTLIGHT – CAMP

It’s an honour to give our next spotlight to Nadine Evans, Founder of CAMP (Canadian Association of Marketing Professionals) located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. See her Q&A below:

Why did you decide to be a business owner?

Nadine_Nov2014.jpgA few years ago, I found myself feeling like a dinosaur. I need to stay relevant as a marketing professional, but didn’t know where to begin. I needed an association to keep me informed and connected, but to my dismay, there wasn’t an association that I could join that met my needs. This was discouraging – every profession in Canada had an organization to join, but for some reasons, there wasn’t anything available to me as a marketer. Since there wasn’t one, we founded a not for profit that filled this need. I wasn’t driven by the need to work on my own or be my own boss, but by the passion of our vision.

In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of being a business owner?

Pros: Flexibility, working towards something that I fundamentally believe in, and knowing that each day we’re making a difference, building the organization.

Cons: Stress – lots and lots of it. The constant fear that I’m making the wrong decisions or not going to be able to make CAMP sustainable.

What are some hurdles you had to overcome while being a business owner?

We’re a start-up not for profit, so everyday feels like a hurdle. Start-up organizations (either for profit or not for profit) face so many challenges – monetization, early adopters, adapting business models, so it’s almost easier to state what wasn’t a challenge!

Our proudest moment was at our first ever Awards Gala, where we celebrated the work of incredible Canadian marketers. The event was a struggle to launch, and ended up surpassing our projections by more than 50%.

What is your vision and exit strategy for the business?

Nadine&MichaelMy vision is for CAMP to the go to marketing association for marketers of all types, all
across Canada. One day, I hope we have tens of thousands of members from all provinces of Canada. My goal is to always be a part of this organization, but I don’t see myself running it day to day as it grows and becomes a viable organization.
